About Me

No, this in not a blog about gardening in any way, but a journal of my journey to become a professional landscape painting artist. For years, I’ve given my paintings as wedding gifts without thinking of profiting in some way from it. I worked for 18 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC as a computer programmer. I have been a painter since 1990, coincidentally, when I started working at the Met. I watched Bob Ross do his thing on Channel 13 in New York and decided I could do this, too. I have no formal training. I incorporate Bob's wet-on-wet technique for sky and water. My subject matter is covered bridges, lighthouses, fishing village scenes, barns, etc. Maine, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Nova Scotia and Spain are some of the places I have painted. My style is detailed and sometimes people think a photo of the painting is an actual photo of the scene. I hope to continue and grow in this medium. I also like to cook & dance. I am also a committed Christian. I am taking commissions - painting your landscapes style photos or your vacation home. Prices on request. contact me - Jackmck@juno.com my website is www.artofjackmckenzie.com

My 2027 Jack Mckenzie Art Calendar is now available

Every year when I have at least 12 paintings I make a calendar. I realize many people do one a week at least, but work schedule, looking for a picture to paint and my tendency to overthink the painting are the culprits

Here is the the cover and the 2027 Calendar  link

Halloween Costume - Zombie Bob Ross

I got my start in art by watching Bob Ross on Channel 13 in NJ. There is an artistic streak in the family, My brother plays 10 instruments and my cousin was all in with painting and sculpting until drugs took him. I had not made any attempts until started watching Bob and started working as a programmer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. We had employee art shows so my paintings have hung in the Met.

I was going to a costume pot luck and try to decide what to go as. On-line I saw a Bob Ross Costume being sold at Spirit of Halloween so I bought it. It included a wild wig and beard, a blue shirt, a a fake pallet with a large brush and a makeup kit. I decided to go as Zombie Bob Ross. . The fake paint pallet came with it and put pictures of crabby old tree, and a zombie squirrel. The shirt did not fit me, so I got and old white shirt and zombified it, I used the makeup on my face and hands but the wig and beard covered. Won prize for most artistic. Many people were unfamiliar with Bob Ross so thought I was a werewolf, and a few people were a bit taken aback by me. One person suggested a used toilet brush. The hair and beard could have used atrim
