About Me

No, this in not a blog about gardening in any way, but a journal of my journey to become a professional landscape painting artist. For years, I’ve given my paintings as wedding gifts without thinking of profiting in some way from it. I worked for 18 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC as a computer programmer. I have been a painter since 1990, coincidentally, when I started working at the Met. I watched Bob Ross do his thing on Channel 13 in New York and decided I could do this, too. I have no formal training. I incorporate Bob's wet-on-wet technique for sky and water. My subject matter is covered bridges, lighthouses, fishing village scenes, barns, etc. Maine, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Nova Scotia and Spain are some of the places I have painted. My style is detailed and sometimes people think a photo of the painting is an actual photo of the scene. I hope to continue and grow in this medium. I also like to cook & dance. I am also a committed Christian. I am taking commissions - painting your landscapes style photos or your vacation home. Prices on request. contact me - Jackmck@juno.com my website is www.artofjackmckenzie.com

New Painting - Nantucket Rainbow Fleet Parade

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy Nantucket, an island off the coast of Massachuetts? For many years I have gone there to bike the Island with a group of friends while staying at the Hostel on Surfside beach the 3rd weekend in September. I have done a number of paintings of the Brant Point lighthouse.

Nantucket is a former whaling port which has become inhabited by very rich people, full of yachts and expensive sailboats. One of the the events of the summer is the Rainbow Fleet Parade which I have never witnessed, but images of it are everywhere. This parade of multicolored sailboats wheels around the lighthouse with throngs of people watching and i came across a picture that gives a feel of that. I'm not good at doing people but decided to give it a go. As usual, you can buy items based on this image form the Pixels site

Here's the painting

Again, despite the ring light, it still photographs darker, so maybe a new camera is in order

Here is my reference photo. The sails were all one color, but i looked at other pictures and saw many striped sales, so I added those in. The Lighthouse now has an American Flag on it, so I added that in. There are more people than I painted in, but I felt I put in enough to give it the right feel.

Here is the reference photo and some paint progress shots

New Painting - Snowy BarnAlbion Maine

I get many of my painting subjects from friend's  pictures off of Facebook and in this case, it was my nephew DJ (Donald) Mckenzie who lives on my brother's farm in Albion Maine. I have done paintings from pictures his mother and sister posted and now he joins my list.

There was a snow storm and he took a a number of pictures and I saw this one and decided to paint it. So here's what I painted

Here is the painting.

and here is the source photo

The painting for some reason photographs darker than it is. I even brought a ring light to help, and it did, but not as much as I wanted.
