About Me

My photo
Paramus, New Jersey, United States
No, this in not a blog about gardening in any way, but a journal of my journey to become a professional landscape painting artist. For years, I’ve given my paintings as wedding gifts without thinking of profiting in some way from it. I worked for 18 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC as a computer programmer. I have been a painter since 1990, coincidentally, when I started working at the Met. I watched Bob Ross do his thing on Channel 13 in New York and decided I could do this, too. I have no formal training. I incorporate Bob's wet-on-wet technique for sky and water. My subject matter is covered bridges, lighthouses, fishing village scenes, barns, etc. Maine, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Nova Scotia and Spain are some of the places I have painted. My style is detailed and sometimes people think a photo of the painting is an actual photo of the scene. I hope to continue and grow in this medium. I also like to cook & dance. I am also a committed Christian. I am taking commissions - painting your landscapes style photos or your vacation home. Prices on request. contact me - Jackmck@juno.com my website is www.artofjackmckenzie.com

my 2020 art Calendar is out

For some reason I procrastinated on this. It should have been done before Black Friday, but it's done via Zazzle. It has a lot of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, but also New Jersey, Lancaster, Covered Bridges and a cafe in Spain.
Here's the Title page and the link to the 2020 calendar

New painting - Brant Point Lighthouse Sunset

Inspiration for a new painting come from many sources. This one is from the Instagram page of @Hotelpippa - a rather pricey boutique hotel on Nantucket. As I've said before, I stay at the hostel with friends one weekend a year on this Cape Cod island and enjoy the sights, particularly this light house. I've done many paintings of it.

Bergen County Art in the Park 2019

The Art in the Park happens very year on Columbus Day Saturday (Sunday rain-out date). The county send out invites to former participants and I was a bit late in getting mine in. Last year they were begging for people to come, but this year that had an avalanche of interest and I was too late.
However, I got a call on Wednesday  that some on dropped out and a spot was available. I took it! I was scheduled to work 2 - cl at Staples but was able to get come in at 4.

Nice day. I had done the usual Face Book event creation and invite, but it seems that failed. There was a very good band, print making demo, a food truck and other things.
One of the more interesting things that happened was how the the sun shown on one of my paintings
Snow on Main Street Nantucket. For a minute or two, it showed the contours of it in almost a bas-relief way. It really popped out.

sold a painting - Chappy Ferry Sunrise

My friend Rob Blumenstock saw this painting on FB and decided to buy it. His mother bought another of my paintings a while ago.  Notice what a difference lighting makes in the photography of paintings. Thanks Rob!

More art quote and cartoons

Here's a few more things to make you think and smile from Georgia O'Keefe, Bob Ross, Pissaro  and others. Enjoy

Starving artist recipe - Mango Salsa Salmon

Again - a recipe for the feeding of a starving artist
Mango Salsa Salmon
Walking thru Stew Leonards I spotted containers of mango/pineapple salsa. Love mango, so I bought it and some salmon fillets (too expensive, since it had Martha Stewart's lemon butter with it). Today I as in Shop Rite and the asparagus was on sale, so tonight's dinner was compete (celebrating a long hard 4 days at Staples copy center and tomorrow off) .
First a layer of asparagus with a squeeze of lemon
Then the salmon, which i seasoned and added a 2 tbls of my brother's (Mckenzie of Maine) maple syrup. I got the maple syrup maybe a year ago and over time it's thickened and developed a nice smoky taste)
The the Salsa and into a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. The oven off while I made the Lemon couscous. Yum!

New Painting - Chappy Ferry Sunrise

Again a painting of one of my favorite places - Martha's Vineyard. This painting was done using a photo from the Vineyard Colors Facebook page. The photographer enjoys having people paint his photos and then he posts them on the page.
This scene is the ferry going from Edgartown to Chappaquiddick on first run of the day. It's aout a hundred yard trip. He probably took this from the 2nd story of the public dock in Edgartown. It's a favorite place to go and observe the passing scene, especially with an order of fried quohogs from The Quartermaster nearby
I'm not happy with this one, but I started it and stopped for awhile. Finally decided to get it finished and get on to the next one

New Painting - Foggy Day on Tisbury Wharf

Foggy Day at Tisbury Wharf
As the ferry comes into Vineyard Haven, when you are almost to the dock, to your port side is the Tisbury Wharf. It is a marina with a distinctive yellow shack that is a fueling station. This will be my third painting of this shack, all three times using the photos posted on the Vineyard Colors .
The photographer encourages painters to use his photos and will post them on his page.
It is a foggy picture and if it looks a bit blurry, well that's what foggy looks like

It is an image I enjoy and will probably do another painting or two of it
