About Me

My photo
Paramus, New Jersey, United States
No, this in not a blog about gardening in any way, but a journal of my journey to become a professional landscape painting artist. For years, I’ve given my paintings as wedding gifts without thinking of profiting in some way from it. I worked for 18 years at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC as a computer programmer. I have been a painter since 1990, coincidentally, when I started working at the Met. I watched Bob Ross do his thing on Channel 13 in New York and decided I could do this, too. I have no formal training. I incorporate Bob's wet-on-wet technique for sky and water. My subject matter is covered bridges, lighthouses, fishing village scenes, barns, etc. Maine, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Nova Scotia and Spain are some of the places I have painted. My style is detailed and sometimes people think a photo of the painting is an actual photo of the scene. I hope to continue and grow in this medium. I also like to cook & dance. I am also a committed Christian. I am taking commissions - painting your landscapes style photos or your vacation home. Prices on request. contact me - Jackmck@juno.com my website is www.artofjackmckenzie.com

new painting - LBI - Summer's End Sunset

I get inspiration from friend's photos on Facebook. Jeannie Weiss and her husband live on the bay side Long Beach Island on the Jersey Shore, so they see a lot of sunsets. This picture they took at the end of summer and id had a very impressionistic feel so that's how i painted it and the final result is marvelous. As usual, you can go to pixels and purchase items based on this image

this is the original picture

New Painting - Hamilton Ontario Snowy Barn

I have been lax in keeping this blog up. I was in a county art show in a local park and a few other things, which I will get to later.

This is my latest painting  Hamilton Ontario Snowy Barn, using a photo from Harold Hutchings Photography who has been most generous in allowing me to use his images.

I love painting barns and snow pictures and this is the best of both worlds. As usual you can by items based on this image via Pixels and find the painting and the original picture below. The painting always seems to come out darker here

new painting: COTW - Requiem for the Lyre/Trinity Tree

There is a Christian Family Camp in the Adirondacks called Camp-of -Woods (COTW) in Lake Pleasant in Speculator NY that my family has been going to for generations. There are many cabins and other buildings that over time, outlive their usefullness or need modernization, which can get in the way of  traditions and what we are used to. COTW has been going thru a period of renovation and modernization to appeal to a younger crowd.

One of these buildings is the Wigwam, named for a time back when there were American Indian designations to many things. It was nice and comfortable and right on the beach, but it was getting old and needed to be replaced. Right next to it was a 3 branch tree called variously the Trinity, Lyre or Family tree. Generations of families have their pictures taken sitting on those branches.  It was the victim of "progress". They probably could have incorporated it into the new building, but costs are a big issue. This painting is a tribute to that tree. As usual you can check out pixels for items based on that image.

Here is the painting and the images I used to do the painting.

Living in New Jersey the summer means going to The Shore - beaches and boardwalks. We all have a favorite beach to go to and mine is Ocean Grove just South of Asbury Park.  This painting shows a common sight at the entrance to the beaches - small boats positioned by the entrance containing books for beach goers to take, read and put back when finished. As usual, i loaded this painting to Pixels so you can check out various merch with this image. I am including the reference photo and paint progress shots.

new painting - Heceta Head Lighthouse Sunset

Lighthouses and sunsets - Perfect together. As usual, I trolled Facebook for some paintable images and this time it was fro the Oregon Coast FB page and an image by Jerry Johnson. Got his permission to paint it and here it is. I print out the images and sometimes the printer at my local Staples changes the color, this time from pinkish to orange (it's a laser printer with photo settings, not a photo printer). I decided to go with that. As usual, I was obsessing over final details, but decided it look good as it was. I still need to work on my ocean painting.

As usual, here's my link to Pixels.com   in case you are interested in buy a mug or bag.

Also as usual, I post paint progress pictures. I'm always taking pictures to check how the painting looks. Cameras catch things you miss and changes it too. The image also appears darker on social media than it actually is,

new painting - Aruba Beach

New painting - Aruba Beach. 11x14 oil on canvas board.

New painting - Aruba Beach. 11x14 oil on canvas board. My usual wedding present is one of my paintings. My nephew Richard Fedouchik got married to Barbara Rodriquez and I decided to let them choose from my vast inventory (70+works) instead of choosing for them, but they could not decide. They went on their honeymoon and came back with this picture and wanted it painted. Done.

New Painting: Hanging Out At Ocean Grove.

One of my favorite places on the Jersey Shore is Ocean Grove. It started as a Methodist camping ground and today is a favorite place for many Christians. The used to close the town on Sunday, but that stopped a while ago. The centerpiece is a 100 year old auditorium where church services and various concerts happen

Another major feature is the Fishing Pier, which had a club house at the end, but was almost destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Several sections of pilings are left, up to the main park of it. People use it to hang out on the beach under it. This is my rendition of it.

As usual, you can buy items based on this image from Pixels.com

Below are the painting, the image I used to paint it and some progress shots
